- Without a contract for 1927, Babe Ruth, who had just completed a movie titled “Babe Comes Home” in Hollywood, demands a new contract of $100,000 a year from Yankee owner Col. Jacob Ruppert. The contract, which the Yankees are reluctant to agree to, would make the Babe the highest paid baseball player in history.

- Amid the color and fanfare of Opening Day at Yankee Stadium on April 12, 1927, 72,000 fans, the largest crowd in the history of baseball at that time, turn out to see Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig of the Yankees and Ty Cobb and Eddie Collins of the Philadelphia Athletics.

- While at Cleveland’s Dunn Field in May, the game between the Yankees and Indians is stopped after it is reported that American aviator Capt. Charles Lindbergh has landed on the outskirts of Paris, becoming the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The fans and players stand as the “Star Spangled Banner” is played in honor of the momentous event. Similar celebrations take place in other ballparks.

- Babe Ruth faces left-hander Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium in a historic confrontation on September 30, culminating in the Yankee slugger’s record-breaking 60th home run.


About the Author
Fred Glueckstein was raised in the Bronx, only a few blocks from Yankee Stadium. While growing up, he spent many fond hours at the Stadium watching such Yankee greats as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford. He attended Queens College of the City University of New York and New York University. Besides a life-time interest in baseball, Fred has written extensively about horses. He has been published in a number of magazines and journals, including The Chronicle of the Horse, Horses in Art, Equestrian, ARMY magazine, Preakness Souvenir Magazine, and Finest Hour, the official publication of the Churchill Centre and International Societies. Fred and his wife Eileen live in Sykesville, Maryland. They have two children, Brian and Debra.
