The '27 Yankees
Sykesville, Maryland — October 1, 2005 — An author
from Maryland has published a non-fiction book on the team of the century:
the 1927 New York Yankees. Named Murderers’ Row, the ’27 Yankees are considered
the most legendary and revered team in the annals of baseball: a team whose
magical name, even today, evokes the standard of excellence in America’s
most treasured sport.
The ’27 Yankees by Fred Glueckstein is the definitive
historical account of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs,
Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock, and teammates from Spring Training in St. Petersburg,
Florida through the World Series.
The ’27 Yankees transports the reader
back to that exciting season to experience events on and off the diamond
through the detailed day-to-day re-creations of the team’s games.
As in all baseball seasons, there are wonderful stories of personal accomplishment
and team triumphs and defeats. There are, of course, other stories or
subplots – both on and off the field – that are part of the game; almost
like threads that are interwoven into a fabric of a large quilt. It was
no different in 1927. Consider only a few of the many, many colorful stories
that unfolded during that glorious season.
- Without a contract for 1927, Babe Ruth, who had just completed a movie
titled “Babe Comes Home” in Hollywood, demands a new contract of $100,000
a year from Yankee owner Col. Jacob Ruppert. The contract, which the Yankees
are reluctant to agree to, would make the Babe the highest paid baseball
player in history.
- Amid the color and fanfare of Opening Day at Yankee Stadium on April
12, 1927, 72,000 fans, the largest crowd in the history of baseball at
that time, turn out to see Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig of the Yankees and
Ty Cobb and Eddie Collins of the Philadelphia Athletics.
- While at Cleveland’s Dunn Field in May, the game between the Yankees
and Indians is stopped after it is reported that American aviator Capt.
Charles Lindbergh has landed on the outskirts of Paris, becoming the first
man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The fans and players stand
as the “Star Spangled Banner” is played in honor of the momentous event.
Similar celebrations take place in other ballparks.
Detailed, lively and richly-layered,
The ’27 Yankees is easily the most
essential baseball book any reader can find at their respective libraries
and bookstores today! Fred Glueckstein’s book is an incredible home run
for reading!
