Author of The '27 Yankees to Speak on July 28 at
Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards
Sykesville, Maryland — July 1, 2007 — Fred Glueckstein,
a resident of Maryland, will be speaking and signing copies of his baseball
book
The ’27 Yankees, considered by many as the greatest
team in the history of the game, at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards
on Saturday, July 28 at 1:00 pm.
“I am honored to have been invited by the Babe Ruth Museum to talk about
the 1927 Yankees and what was the Babe’s greatest accomplishment: hitting
60 home runs,” said Fred Glueckstein. “I am also pleased to have the opportunity
to be at the Sports Legend Museum on the 80th Anniversary of the historic
’27 Yankee season during the same week-end that the New York Yankees are
in Baltimore to play the Orioles.”
The ’27 Yankees is the definitive historical account of
Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock,
and teammates covering Spring Training in St. Petersburg through the World
Series. Detailed, lively and richly-layered, the book is an essential baseball
book on a past era and the greatest team ever.
“The search for the complete story of a team considered by many as the
greatest ever was an exciting journey,” said Glueckstein, “one that opened
up for me the wonderful newspapers from New York and other cities at that
time, out-of-print memoirs, and the archives of the National Baseball
Hall of Fame.”
After his appearance at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, Glueckstein
will at the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York on
Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10:00 am. He will be speaking and signing copies
of his book as part of an all day event titled “New York Baseball in Books.”
Book Review
Kirkus Discoveries
“Baseball aficionados don’t agree on much. But nearly all will assent
to the following: The 1927 Yankees were the greatest collection of ball
players ever to lace up their spikes and take the field. After all, this
was the team whose batting order earned the infamous nickname “Murderers’
Row” for its historic exploits . . . Glueckstein has carefully pieced
together the story of the season by recapping newspaper articles [and
other sources] published at that time. Other comments by the reviewer
of The ’27 Yankees: “the book is rich in minutia . . . an enormous amount
of data . . . intriguing vignettes about the individual players . . .
fascinating for statisticians and baseball historians.”
